SELF MANAGED SUPERANNUATION FUNDS (SMSF)4 July 2008

The ATO is targeting SMSF's to ensure that they comply with the onerous and rgid Taxation Laws and SIS Regulations.

SMSF's are complicated and professional advice should always be sought for Investment Strategy, Fund Management, Trustee Obligations - the risk of losing 45% of your SMSF's assets where incorrect actions are taken is a great incentive to always seek professional advice.

ATO Reminder4 July 2008

The ATO reminds taxpayers that Personal Income Tax Returns are required to be lodged by 31 October 2008 unless taxpayers are using a Registered Tax Agent. Registered Tax Gents have an extension of time for lodgement of client Income Tax Returns in most instances up to 30 April 2009.

For the 2008 Financial Year the ATO will be paying particular attention to:

investors, including rental properties, dividends and interest, sale of investments and tax schemes.

salary packages of execitives and directors.

employees and their work related claims.

EDUCATION TAX REFUNDS START 1 July 20084 July 2008

The Education Tax Refund will provide parents with much-needed help for education expenses, with refunds up to:
$375 per primary school student; and
$750 per secondary school student

The refund claim is 50% of every dollar spent up to the the maximum amount shown above per child. The education expenses include: laptops, home computers, internet connections, printers, education software, schooltext books, stationery etc.

Parents will need to retain receipts for all edcation expenses to justify the claim.
